The Saturday started out with such promise. My oldest
daughter Heidi and her family were arriving for a visit. Luke was having a
birthday party and there was the fundraiser for the Johnny Sack Cabin that I
wanted to photograph and write about. A festive Friday was in in my sights.
Around 10:00 am, Sheri informed me that she let the water out of the kitchen
sink and the sink was bubbling. Upon further investigation, the main drain was
in fact clogged. Pulling the toilet, I used a borrowed a 50 foot snake but to
no avail. The clog must be farther out towards the road! I called my dependable
plumber, Trent of T&T Plumbing but no answer! How dare he take the weekend
off!!
My next move was to call John Brown of the sewer
district. While waiting for him, I checked my phone. I was missing the
fundraiser and late to the birthday party. John promptly arrived and pulled a
manhole. He told me what I didn’t want to hear, “It’s not in the main line. It
must be on your property.” By this time my daughter and her family arrived. We
rushed to make the tail end of Luke’s party.
Returning home, it was apparent that we would have to
make due until the drain could be cleared. It was time to break out the camping
equipment. I set up the chemical toilet in the bathroom.
Next, I broke out my
outdoor shower stall and my Coleman Hot-Water-on-Demand shower. Yes it was a
bit of camping but what the heck, we live in the mountains. The modifications
made things a bit more challenging but it did not dampen our visit. Monday
morning I got in touch of Trent and by the time you read this I hopefully have
a functioning sewer drain.
Life is always a little messier than we plan for but it
is how we adapt that teaches life skills to our children and grandchildren.
