Island Park is Well Managed

The first City Council meeting of 2015 was a review of last year’s finances and projects for the City of Island Park. Robert Hardy, CPA presented the council with the financial statement for 2014.
Over the past several years, the city has been frugal, building its financial reserves. Island Park now has the funds to provide city services for one year without additional revenue.

The city applied to receive a continuing portion of revenue from traffic citations issued within Island Park a few years ago. The funds are used to purchase safety equipment for the Fremont County Deputies that serve caldera residents. Patrolling isolated Island Park, backup may not be nearby. In 2014, a six thousand dollar dash-cam was purchased by the city.

The addition of a turn lane on Yale-Kilgore Rd at Elk Creek improved both traffic safety and flow. It was accomplished without the use of city funds.

Island Park also began work on improving the cemetery.

While these accomplishments may seem trivial by national standards, prudent and achievable projects like these are an efficient use of government resources. Many of the city’s efforts may go unnoticed but that is not necessarily bad. Perhaps the government that governs least governs best!
